When he says “it does come with the tag” - - I’m trying to figure out what that means. The VIN tag? If so, I think that makes it even sketchier? If that’s possible?

$250 seems like a lot for half a title.

$250 for a piece of paper and a license plate

Can’t beat that with a big rock

Go for it

$250 Truck title, needs work. Parts Missing: Truck.

There’s some metal bit below the title that looks like it might be a VIN tag. I’m pretty sure there are laws against you doing something like this.

I’m pretty sure he’s talking about the VIN tag. I think we’re at max sketchiness on this one. If you had a truck with a salvage title I’d bet he’d poprivet it on for an extra $10 and instant clean title truck!!

I think he means VIN tag; a complete stolen truck to clean title kit!

I’m sure he’d negotiate for $200 of meth if you think $250 is high.

And that’s without even asking where the heck this paperwork and tag came from! I’m sure the seller will say it’s been scrapped, but isn’t there supposed to be a paperwork trail for that, too?

Because it’s pre-1981, it’s not searchable via CarFax, etc. either - -

I’m sure you’re right - - this feels pretty bold to me, considering it’s only for $250. I’d be carrying if I went to look at this - spoiler alert, I’m not.

Yeah, the scrapyard is supposed to take the title. My guess is he parted it out and either still has the frame sitting around or he cut it into pieces small enough to scrap without throwing up red flags.

I would think that if the frame is intact (even if rusty or bent), it would make more sense and bring more $ to include that with the title, just to remove the sketch factor. More likely is the latter, he sold that for scrap and is just ignorant about what’s required to scrap it.

Or, he murdered the previous owner in a Craiglist scam and is now disposing of the evidence. Could go either way.

So you’re saying if the title is in someone else’s name I should keep a close eye on my organs? I’m not sure if they’re ready to be harvested, but why take the chance.

You know, it’s funny about that - - I would always be wary of a title that’s not in the seller’s name, but with all of the flippers out there, it sounds like it’s pretty common.

However, I have to admit that I haven’t bought a used car since 1991, when the world was a pretty different place. And in thinking about it, I’m pretty sure that I bought my very first car with a title that wasn’t in the seller’s name in 1984. But it was pretty clear to me that he was flipping that car - it was a barn find that he got running, then sold.

I haven’t bought a vehicle with the title not in the sellers name, but I know plenty of people that have and a couple that have sold them that way. Thankfully none have had any issues that I know of.

He just worded the ad wrong. “ 1979 Chevy pick-needs full restoration. Have title.”

I’m sure there are a couple of Bugattis and Duesenbergs that started their restoration process pretty much like this. Who am I to consider the guy shady for being the first I see do it with a 79 Chevy truck?
